Mission of the Month – August 2020 – POBLO

The August Mission of the Month is POBLO.  https://www.poblo.org/     (586) 477-1530

POBLO is short for People of the Book Lutheran Outreach.  (People of the Book is a term used by Muslims for Jews and Christians, and the Book is the Bible.) POBLO began its ministry in 1993.

POBLO is committed to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Confessions and Doctrine in every area of its ministry.

POBLO International Ministries is a non-profit, Christian organization that is passionate about sharing the love of Jesus with Muslims and other immigrants and refugees living in the United States. (These immigrants and refugees have all come to the United States legally, and some are persecuted converts to Christianity.)

POBLO’s MISSION–To meet the physical, social, and spiritual needs of Muslims and other immigrants and refugees in the United States by sharing the love of Jesus in practical and culturally relevant ways.

This mission field is in our own backyard—metro Detroit area and across the United States. POBLO International Ministries shares the Gospel by engaging in cross-cultural missions, grassroots community outreach, and training and partnering with local churches.

POBLO’s approach. Before we can share the love of Jesus, we must first bridge the gap between Americans and Muslims, and other immigrants and refugees who came to the United States for a better life. To do this, we reach out in friendship and love and build relationships and trust between our missionaries and volunteers (who are sharing the Gospel) and Muslims, and other immigrants and refugees who may not know the love of Jesus Christ. We have a three-pronged approach to our non-profit ministry:  Missions, Community Engagement, Training and Education.

How POBLO serves.  POBLO offers refugee resettlement assistance, cultural and social assimilation, shelter, English classes, sewing classes, support to persecuted converts, friendship and hospitality, and more.  POBLO has created multiple non-profit campaigns to better share the story of Jesus, raise awareness among Christian women about Islam, and to educate students in the United States about what it’s like to be a refugee child from another place in the world to help develop awareness, empathy, and compassion for refugees.

International Friendship Centers (IFCs) are set up in local churches.  IFCs offer practical help as well as the opportunity to share the Gospel.  Congregations in Michigan with IFCs are:   Atonement Lutheran Dearborn, Hope Lutheran Warren, Living Word Lutheran Plymouth, Christ Our King Lutheran Saline, Prince of Peace Lutheran Farmington Hills.  The POBLO office is located in Clinton Township and Cynthia Khan is our main contact.  (586) 477-1530.

Cross of Christ Family Life Center (gymnasium) has been the location of POBLO’s annual International Women’s Tea for many years.
