The July 2023 Mission of the Month is Lutheran Special Education Ministries (LSEM) (www.luthsped.org).
For 150 years, LSEM has been helping children in need. First as an orphanage, then as Lutheran School for the Deaf, and currently providing resource room services, professional development, and educational support to churches and schools across the country. The ministry’s vision is to provide children the opportunity to grow academically and spiritually regardless of the challenges they may face.
Lutheran Special Education Ministries national office is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They now partner with Lutheran and Christian schools in 15 states and an international school in Hanoi, Vietnam. Here in Michigan, LSEM supports 23 Lutheran Day schools, 2 Lutheran High Schools, and 2 Lutheran iCAN Learning Centers (Pontiac and Detroit).
The mission of the Individualized Christian Achievement Network (iCAN) program is to support spiritual and academic growth among at-risk inner-city children using after-school or summer programs focused on Literacy, Fine Arts, and Mathematics. iCAN is supplemental instruction in a Christ-centered setting and all sessions begin and end with prayer.
About 1 in 5 children struggle with traditional learning methods. LSEM partners with schools and churches to provide academic, spiritual, and organizational support. LSEM operates Resource Rooms around the country and provides teachers and resources to reinforce concepts and assess success. Students who learn differently receive a Christian education that addresses their learning needs.
